Brian Gaucher performed his undergraduate work at U-Mass (1982) and graduate work at Northeastern University (1993).
From 1982-83 he worked at Alpha Industries R&D lab designing microwave GaAsFET amplifiers, switches detectors limiters, filters and super-components.
In 1984 he joined GTE Communication Systems Division, working in the area of research and development of secure spread spectrum communication and radar systems for the military, across the 900 MHz to 60 GHz frequency bands.
In 1993 he joined IBM, where he has been a research staff member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. He managed a communication system design and characterization group, where his research interests included cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi, UWB and 60 GHz multi-Gbps wireless communication design, 77 and 94GHz radar and biomedical applications of wireless technology, in advanced CMOS and SiGe. His group has helped more than five products to market in this space. He also managed a worldwide team of people developing standards compliant High-speed-serial (HSS) link solutions up to 25Gbps with complex equalization in advanced CMOS technologies.
From 2009 to 2012 he was a Sr. manager in IBMs Smarter Energy dept, leading a grand challenge of smart grid simulation of of ultra-large-scale networks and complex systems of systems e.g. regional US grid networks. He was coordinating university research in smart grids as well as promoting power systems curriculum development. He was also helping to coordinate IBMs worldwide labs smart grid solutions.
2012-2016 Brian Gaucher has been a Sr. Manager/Principal RSM of IBM’s Cognitive Environments Lab focused on the creation of highly interactive physical spaces designed to improve decision-making through always-on ambient intelligence; a human machine partnership to enhance cognition. To date he and his team have created three world-class laboratories and experiential centers: the Cognitive Environments Laboratory (CEL), the IBM Research THINK Lab and the IBM Watson Client Experience Center.
_2016-present: He is P-RSM/Manager and Quantum sub-theme technical lead of IBM’s quantum computing future systems design at IBM research, where his work is focused on novel architectures for quantum electronics for scientific and commercial applications. Specifically, from 2019-2022 he managed two Quantum gates teams and is co-lead of the custom cryo-CMOS control and readout development. From 2016-2019 he led the development and implementation of IBM’s room temperature based control electronics for Quantum systems and deployment.
He's been an IBM master inventor with over 60 US and foreign patents pending, filed or issued. He's received two Corporate Awards, four Outstanding-Technical-Achievement awards, a Research Division Award and has authored or co-authored over 50 papers, one book. He's been IBM's voting member of the IEEE: P2030, 1809, 1547, 802.11, 802.15 and ECMA. He was the chairman of the SRC Energy Research Initiative’s Governing Council 2010-2013.
