Lucian Popa is a Principal Research Scientist at IBM Almaden Research Center, where he manages a team focused on human-in-the-loop systems for scaling NLP technologies to more users and applications. His research is focused on bringing together human, data, and machine, to facilitate the next-generation of data-driven AI systems. Lucian is known for his work on schema mapping, data exchange and, more recently, entity resolution and entity linking. He has contributed to several IBM products, and is one of the developers of HIL, a declarative framework for scalable entity resolution. He has co-authored numerous research publications that are highly cited, with three of them receiving Test-of-Time Awards in the ICDT, PODS and EDBT conferences. He is a winner of the 2020 Alonzo Church Award for Outstanding Contributions to Logic and Computation, for ground-breaking work laying the logical foundations for data exchange. He is an ACM Distinguished Member.
