Bio

Dr Steven Thomson joined IBM Research in October 2023. He is interested in complex quantum systems and particularly in ways to simulate the non-equilibrium dynamics of many-body quantum matter. His academic research has focused on how disorder, typically in the form of random impurities, can affect the properties of quantum systems in surprising ways and lead to enigmatic phases of matter such as spin glasses, many-body localisation and even time crystals.

He has previously been a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin and has held postdoctoral research positions at Collège de France, the Centre de Physique Théorique (École Polytechnique), and the Institut de Physique Théorique (CEA Paris-Saclay). He obtained his PhD from the University of St Andrews in 2016, supervised by Dr Frank Krüger (UCL) and Dr Chris Hooley (St Andrews). He is the founder and host of the insideQuantum podcast, funded by the Unitary Fund.
