Bio

Kristjan Greenewald is a Senior Research Scientist and Manager at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab (IBM Research). Dr. Greenewald received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 2017 focusing on signal processing and machine learning, and was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Harvard University Statistics department (2017-2018) before joining IBM Research in 2018.

At IBM Research, Dr. Greenewald leads a team focused on fundamental AI/LLM research collaborating with MIT as part of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. He has served as principal investigator for multi-year research grants with MIT, and has produced numerous publications in top AI conferences and journals. Recent areas include robust RLHF and evaluation of LLM alignment with theoretical guarantees, efficient LLM finetuning architectures, uncertainty quantification and reasoning for LLMs, and differential privacy for synthetic data generation.

In 2024, Dr. Greenewald received an IBM Research Accomplishment for contributions to Causal Inference for Business Decision Making, and in 2021 an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award for contributions to the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab Membership Program, and regularly serves as Area Chair at NeurIPS.
