User's perspective of optoelectronic integration
Abstract
Application requirements are identified and a user's perspective is given on various elements of optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) technology (e.g., materials, devices, circuits, packaging, and design). Research directions that can accelerate the use of OEICs in data processing and data communications applications are discussed. The GaAs version of an integrated technology seems ready to develop for high-performance, short-distance applications, while the InP and all-photonic implementations continue to make progress for more distant time frames. However, both technologies should be pushed vigorously, as the ultimate system leverages of optoelectronic integration are not likely to be covered for all applications by only one technology.
