Throughput Reduction due to Non-uniform Traffic in a Packet Switch with Input and Output Queueing

View publication

Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of traffic imbalance in a family of space-division packet switches implementing both input and output queue- ing, and varying degrees of speedup. In this study, traffic intensity at each input port is allowed to vary and the output destination distribution is not uniform. Our model accounts for this non-uniformity and quantifies the impact of traffic imbalance on the maximum switch throughput. It is seen that input imbalance has a more adverse effect on throughput than output imbalance. It is also observed that, under the same input imbalance conditions, the percentage of throughput reduction is higher for switches with higher speedup, while under the same output imbalance conditions, this trend is reversed.
