Abstract

The Foundation’s 1986 Annual Lecture The challenge of survival in Britain in the 21st century is to maintain the prosperity we need to keep our institutions intact, our basic services secure, our privileges inviolate and our aspirations unlimited. To respond successfully to this challenge we must meet five conditions: ensure our managers are good enough to exploit the future opportunities for success; nurture our science and technology resources; make our education resources more responsive to the needs of the nation; understand the constantly changing business world; and put an end to the anti-industry culture which pervades our institutions and attitudes. Britain has enormous assets and can survive. We have to combine our intellectual resources and our will to win. That is our greatest hope for the future. © 1987 Beech Tree Publishing.
