Question of superconducting iron
Abstract
Iron films have been evaporated in ultra-high vacuum onto substrates cooled to liquid-helium temperature. Contrary to the results of Mikhailov et al., no evidence of superconductivity was found in these films. Vanadium films evaporated under similar conditions had superconducting transition temperatures of approximately bulk value. A low-temperature structure modification was indicated for very thin films of iron as well as vanadium. Measurements on oxygen-doped films showed that the low-temperature structure was greatly stabilized by gaseous impurities. © 1963 The American Physical Society.
