Vince Siu

Bio

Vince Siu’s expertise includes Biomedical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Synthetic Biology, and Polymer Chemistry. She earned her B.S. in Biological and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University, and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University. Her thesis centered on developing and integrating innovative nano-engineered materials into optical and electrochemical sensors. Her work was among the first to pioneer the use of plasmonic interferometery for real-time detection of glucose in saliva, which laid the groundwork to enable a non-invasive solution for continuous glucose monitoring. This work was highlighted by the editor of Nature Photonics and featured by other media outlets, including CNET (https://www.cnet.com/news/new-biochip-measures-glucose-levels-in-saliva/) and BioOptics World (https://www.bioopticsworld.com/articles/2014/06/plasmonic-biosensor-could-detect-glucose-levels-in-saliva-rather-than-blood.html).

In 2013, Vince joined Becton Dickinson (BD) as a member of the Technology Leadership Development Program, a program designed to develop future R&D leaders for the organization. She did rotations in BD’s Global Health and Pre-Analytic Systems businesses, developing low-cost diagnostics for pre-eclampsia and cervical cancer detection, and gained much insight into the commercial, translational, and regulatory aspects of developing successful point-of-care assays applied in both personalized and global medicine.

In 2016, Vince joined the Healthcare Life Sciences team as a Research Staff Member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. She is developing novel and miniaturized point-of-care diagnostics for routine health monitoring, and is working to integrate healthcare sensors into an internet-of-things (IoT) platform at IBM’s Bernen Laboratory for Healthcare IoT Research.

Vince has a strong interest in finding creative solutions to address the unmet needs in healthcare in developed and developing countries. She is also passionate about STEM (K-12) education, and strongly believe in programs that help educate and encourage young children to engage in science and engineering. In her spare time, she enjoys running, yoga, hiking, and nature photography.
