Lauren Thomas Quigley

Bio

Dr. Lauren Thomas Quigley is a researcher in the Responsible Technology organization within IBM Research. Her work is focused on social data and its use in AI applications and AI safety. Lauren provides leadership to the Responsible Technology AI Safety research initiative and is a lead for the Open Innovation Community's Leadership, Culture & Inclusion focus area. Dr. Quigley's prior work at Research includes several Tech for Justice initiatives and research agenda development for Responsible Technology. Prior to coming to Research, she worked in IBM's Data and AI organization as the AI Education and Curriculum lead, developing leader, technologist, and tech adjacent AI upskilling programs and offerings for clients. During her time at IBM she has led two funded projects, an NSF Convergence Accelerator planning grant (Award #2119846) and FAccT DEI Scholar award (2022). Prior to joining IBM in 2019, Dr. Quigley worked in the tech industry and higher education developing large scale STEM education programs with an emphasis on machine learning, AI and expanded access to STEM research related pathways.

Dr. Quigley earned her PhD in Engineering Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Master's degree in Optical Engineering from Norfolk State University (HBCU) and Bachelor's degree in Physics from Spelman College (HBCU). She is a member of the ACM, the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine Roundable on Systemic Change in Undergraduate STEM Education, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the National Society of Black Engineers. She additionally serves as a member of the Tennessee State University College of Agriculture advisory board.
