Gciniwe is a Research Staff Member of the Data-Driven Healthcare team at IBM Research-Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is currently working on developing robust machine learning and statistical models to analyse and derive insights from real healthcare data. In conjunction with machine learning algorithms, she is using natural language processing tools to analyse medical reports in text format and digital signal processing techniques to analyse acoustic signals. She holds an MSc degree in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Cape Town and her dissertation focused on individually identifying animal species solely based on acoustic recordings. Gciniwe also holds a BCom Honours degree in Statistical Sciences and BCom degree in Actuarial Science, both BCom degrees obtained from the University of Cape Town, with the latter awarded with an additional major in Mathematics.
