April 10, 2018 - Joint BGU/CCoE Research Recognized by the Prestigious IBM PhD Fellowship Award

IBM announced today that Hagit Grushka–Cohen, a PhD Student in the Software and information System Engineering department at Ben Gurion University, has been recognized by the prestigious 2018 IBM PhD Fellowship Award for her research on security risk assessment in database systems. Hagit's research was done in collaboration with researchers at the Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.

The first phase of the project was aimed at finding a risk evaluation algorithm for database users activity. Using both explicit and implicit information provided by the security officer, the algorithm uses machine learning methods to reveal potential risk for each of the system’s databases and users. This part of the project is currently being integrated into the IBM Guardium product.

Hagit is currently working on using risk information for automatic adjustment of the algorithm's activity sampling policy. The developed sampling strategy will maximize the effectivity of the system, given the system's performance and bandwidth limitation.
