Waveguiding in silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal and single-mode strip waveguides
Abstract
The comparative studies of waveguiding structures on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) in photonic crystal (PhC) and single-mode strip waveguides was discussed. It was found that both the waveguides have submicron cross-sections and were able to provide single-mode waveguiding at telecommunication wavelength. It was also found that deep scaled SOI strip waveguides with the core cross-section as small as 0.1 μm2 were very promising for building dense photonic integrated circuits. For accurate assessment of the performance of PhC sharp 60° bends the transmission spectra were measured on a circuit consisting of 20 bends in a row.
