This brief introduction explores the electronic structure and synthesis of surfaces that are structured at the nanometer level. Magnetic multilayers serve as examples of two-dimensional structures, decorated steps represent one-dimensional systems. Synchrotron radiation spectroscopy can play a leading role in the investigation of electronic states and magnetism of these systems if it can be combined with structural characterization by scanning tunneling microscopy. © 1995.
