PERFORMANCE MODEL FOR OPTICAL RECORDING READ CHANNELS.

Abstract

A model of the readback, equalization and data detection processes in optical recording has been used to analyze the soft error rate performance that could be expected as a function of these parameters and the noise present in the channel. The model is based on one developed to analyze inductive magnetic storage channels. The optical channel model uses much of the methodology and several of the components from the earlier one. Significant modifications and additions were required to allow analysis of codes of interest in optical storage, and to account for the different channel transfer function encountered in an optical channel.
