Abstract

The IBM research division is roughly 3,000 people strong, located at 8 sites worldwide. This paper outlines the history and work of the User Sciences & Experience Research (USER) lab at IBM's Almaden Research Center in Silicon Valley. The USER lab has long been the focus for a number of pivotal developments in input devices for IBM personal computers. More recently, the lab has been extending its research activities to include new kinds of input methods, as well as fundamental work in collaboration technologies and sensemaking. © 2004 ACM.
