The potential use of fluorinated hyperbranched polymers for optical waveguide applications was discussed. The material with good optical waveguide properties must exhibit low optical losses, possess amorphous structure to avoid light scattering and low absorption in the near infrared (NIR) region. The amorphous nature of fluorinated polyaryl ether with low C-H bond content shows very low losses of 0.1 dB/cm at 1550 nm in the NIR region. The multiple end groups in the hyperbranched architecture allow drastic changes in the refractive index from 1.450 to 1.638.
