ZERO SWAPPING/PAGING I/O - A REALITY

Abstract

The author, as part orhis normal work, performs surveys of the resource usage of IBM customer systems. In [1], the author reviewed the dynamics of transaction rate and transaction complexity across a variety ol installations. This paper summarises experience of the dynamics of DASD I/O profiles and describes conclusions from a study of a subset of installations that have achieved an environment with zero or practically zero paging/swapping I/O s to auxiliary storage during the peak periods of operation. The profiles of these environments arc studied with a view to understanding the relationship between workload and processor storage usage. An algorithm is proposed.
