As biotechnologies improve, coupled with falling costs, more and more genomic data becomes available fostering a renewed interest in understanding recombinational dynamics at unprecedented levels. In this paper, we survey the field for established as well as exploratory methods for handling the challenging task of untangling recombinations in observed data. These include ways to measure the effects of recombinations as well as infer the recombination events (crossover) themselves. We next track the progress made in model (or phylogeny) based approaches as they have the potential for ushering in the recombinome, the set of all the crossover points along the chromosome in a given organism. © 2010 ACM.
