Modeling emission limits in product planning

Abstract

This paper presents novel methods to model different emission limits in product planning problem. Along with the increasing environmental pollution and increasing environmental charges and taxes, modeling emission limits become critical for manufactures. This paper divides emission limits into three categories: periodical emission limits, overall emission limits and tradable emission limits. Correspondingly, three different mathematical models are presented to integrate emission limits in product planning. Furthermore, Watson Implosion Technology (WIT) toolkit is introduced to optimize the problem, while emission limits are modeled as capacity, material and purchasable material respectively. The tradable model is also extended to consider developing a replaceable product with lower emission, while it tells manufactures when a new green product should be researched. Experiments demonstrate quantitative influences of different kind of emission limits, and the results indicate that our method can help to make the strategic decision and maximize profits with emissions compliance. ©2008 IEEE.
