Studies are presented on the structure of the ethyl and isopropyl radicals. These are based on the infrared spectra of the radicals generated by the UV photolysis of peroxides in argon matrices. The salient features revealed by the infrared spectra are that rotation about the CC bond in the ethyl radical is unhindered and that the barrier for rotation of the methyl groups in the isopropyi radical is sufficient for the existence of more than one conformation of the isopropyl radical in argon matrices. © 1980.
