IBM AND THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY.

Abstract

IBM Europe has taken a significant initiative to enhance its relationships with Universities and Academic Research. The current environment of fast technological change is causing radical changes to take place in Information Processing, particularly for end-users. Universities are not only advanced users but also participants in research efforts and are suppliers of the scientific skills required by Information Technology industry. The universities, themselves, in many countries are looking for closer co-operation with industry, partly because of increasing financial constraints, but also because of an increasing understanding that such co-operation must have benefits for the countries concerned. The purpose of this paper is to describe the IBM initiative and discuss the benefits to both the Universities and to IBM.
