Physica E: Low-Dimensional Systems and Nanostructures
Single-molecule spectroscopy in solids depends upon several physical phenomena, notably the extreme narrowing of zero-phonon optical transitions at low temperatures which leads to high peak absorption cross-sections and inhomogeneous broadening. The factors influencing the signal-to-noise ratio for fluorescence excitation detection are reviewed, and recent single-molecule experiments are briefly listed. © 1994.
