Electro-optics of a twisted nematic liquid crystal display by 2 x 2 propagation matrix at oblique angle
Abstract
We present a new 2x2 propagation matrix for calculating the electro-optics of a liquid crystal display as a function of applied voltage and viewing angle. The 2x2 matrix method is obtained with the use of a new 2x2 propagation matrix for obliquely propagating light in a layered-inhomogeneous anisotropic medium. We show that the transmissions in a 90° twisted nematic cell at various applied voltages and viewing angles that are computed by the 2x2 matrix method are in good agreement with the experimental results and with those computed by the 4x4 propagation matrix and by the generalized geometrical optics approximation. © 1991 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.
