Recent NMR measurements yielded the electric field gradient (EFG) at the nucleus of alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on a W(110) single-crystal surface. This paper compares these experimental results with the results of a model calculation for alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on jellium. The model predicts the correct signs of the measured EFG. The absolute values of the EFGs are in reasonable agreement with measurements. Calculated temperature dependences of the EFGs were found to be rather small. © 1986 The American Physical Society.
