The dodecahedral coordination of oxygen ions around the c-sites is suggested to be important for the preferential distribution of RE ions in garnet surfaces growing from the melt. Comparison with the situation in cubic, monoclinic and hexagonal RE2O3 indicates that the ionic size ratio should control the site preference. © 1977.
