Bio

Dr. Martin Schmatz completed his PhD at ETH Zurich/Switzerland and joined the IBM Research - Zurich Laboratory in 1999. He established and managed the I/O Link Technology effort optimizing data transport in server systems.

Between 2008 and 2014, Dr. Schmatz headed the Systems department at the IBM Research - Zurich Laboratory, and he took over management responsibilities for the newly formed Cloud Server Technologies team in early 2014. Since 2017, he is responsible for research in the area of KeyProtect, a term which summarizes technologies for protection of keys during generation and storage, protection of keys during usage (e.g. during encrypt/decrypt), and protection of data-in-use.

Dr. Schmatz has contributed to OIF and JEDEC standards, he has 50+ external publications at premier conferences and refereed journals in the field and holds more than 50 patents. He is a member of the IBM Academy of Technology, the IBM Technical Experts Council and has an MBA from the Henley Management College, UK.
