Ed Kahan Business Optimization Leadership Seminar
Smarter Operations for Smarter Planet
June 30, 2010
Organized by IBM Research – Haifa

Invitation

You are cordially invited to participate in the one-day business optimization leadership seminar “Smarter Operations for a Smarter Planet.” The seminar will be held in conjunction with the Technion’s Manufacturing and Service Operations Management (MSOM) conference on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the IBM Haifa Research Lab, located on the University of Haifa campus in Haifa, Israel.

IBM is working towards a smarter planet

The crisis in our financial markets has jolted us awake, resulting in a major focus on the nature and dangers of highly complex global systems. Indeed, the first decade of the twenty first century has been a series of wake-up calls with a single theme: the reality of global integration. The problems of global climate change and energy, global supply chains for food and medicine, new security concerns ranging from identity theft to terrorism – all issues of a hyperconnected world – have surfaced since the beginning of the decade. Therefore, being connected isn’t enough. The planet needs to become smarter. Fortunately, something else is happening that holds new potential: (1) the world is becoming instrumented – sensors are being embedded everywhere: in cars, appliances, cameras, roads, pipelines…even in medicine and livestock; (2) our world is becoming interconnected– systems and objects can now “speak” to each other. However, to solve the challenges ahead, all of these instrumented and interconnected things need to become intelligent. This intelligence can only be achieved by applying advanced analytics and optimization methods that go far beyond the current state of the art, in both academia and practice.

Smarter operations

With a long history of advanced business analytics and optimization solutions applied to real-word customers’ needs and enhanced by recent acquisition of ILOG and SPSS, IBM invites you to the “Smarter Operations for Smarter Planet” seminar, which focuses on developing smarter operations, along with its challenges, methods, and practices. In a smarter planet, intelligence should be infused into the systems and processes that enable services to be delivered; physical goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold; everything from people and money to oil, water and electrons to move; and billions of people to work and live. High level IBM executives and researchers, as well as distinguished guests, will present and discuss smarter planet opportunities, including real customer case studies with OR practices and challenges. In addition, formal and informal mechanisms of collaboration between academia and IBM will be presented.

The seminar will take place in the IBM Haifa Research Lab. Participation is free of charge but registration is required. Please register by June 9 via the registration page.
