Why shouldn’t merit be paid for?

Abstract

True equity is achieved when each is rewarded according to his deserts. If A is better than B he should be paid more. Since there is no way to distinguish the deserts of A from the deserts of B the only equitable way of rewarding them is to pay them the same. If it becomes evident that A is in fact more meritorious this will be acknowledged when he rather than B is promoted when the opportunity arises. © 1975, MCB UP Limited
