Scattering theory of Kondo mirages and observation of single Kondo atom phase shift

View publication

Abstract

The Kondo mirage theory based on electrons in the surface state scattering to infinite order from all Kondo atoms that make up the walls of the corral and that sits at the focus is presented. The theory is applicable for all adatoms arrangements, whether in a coral shape or any other arbitrary structure like open structures. The origin of the Kondo mirage in quantum coral scanning tunneling microscopy with an electron scattering theory on the surfaces of metals provides a direct observation of a single Kondo atom phase shift. The Kondo mirage at the empty focus of an elliptical quantum corral occurred from multiple electron bounces off the coral wall adatoms.
