Obstructed flow between shrouded corotating disks

Abstract

Time-resolved laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) measurements were conducted on an obstructed flow between shrouded corotating disks. With small obstruction the flow is characterized by a turbulent wake in the outer radii and a globally oscillatory flow in the inner radii. This oscillatory motion is shown to enhance the radial transport of flow variables. A steady, three-dimensional turbulence model, which predicts well the time-averaged mean and fluctuating fields of a flow between corotating disks with large obstruction, is incapable of reproducing the flow field with small obstruction where oscillatory flow is dominant. © 1991 American Institute of Physics.
