NiNO. A model for NO on a metal surface
Abstract
Two different mechanisms for the bonding of NO to Ni have been found; the first is for a linear geometry and involves a 3d-2π* bond and has a short Ni-N bond length. The second mechanism, the more weakly bound, involves a Ni4s-N2p bond in a bent structure. The relationship of these two states to NO chemisorbed on metals is discussed. For both mechanisms, there are no open shell electrons on NO, consistent with the fact that multiplet splitting is not definitely observed in the photoemission spectra of adsorbed NO. © 1984 American Institute of Physics.
