Multiparametric microfluidic chips for studying cellular pathways

Abstract

We present a microfluidic device for studying cellular pathways. The device consists of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic network sealed with a Si chip. It comprises two cell chambers, individually addressable through microchannels. Local cell deposition is performed using an efficient, yet simple method based on flow velocity boundaries. A demonstration of the applicability for cellular pathway studies is given by visualizing flow combinations like plug flows and gradients using colored liquids. One important use of this device will be the identification of (bio)chemicals in cellular pathways of the central nervous system, for better understanding their role in brain diseases. © 2009 CBMS.
