The change of core level spectra of atoms or molecules due to adsorption on a metal surface is discussed. It is shown how the possible screening mechanisms modify photoelectron and Auger spectra and can lead to a qualitatively different shake-up structure. This explains recent experimental data showing an unusual shape for the photoelectron spectra. © 1979.
