LAN/ISDN interconnect via frame relay
Abstract
A method that allows efficient interconnection of IEEE 802 LANs (local area networks) and ISDNs (integrated services digital networks) is described. The approach builds on layer-2 connectivity, which assures high performance and transparency to the network layer in the attached stations. The proposed connectivity mechanism uses on the LAN side an extension on the IEEE bridge method, which links on the ISDN side into the frame relay as it is currently being defined by CCITT. The resulting cross-connectivity function is transparent to LAN as well as ISDN stations.
