Knowledge-based stress analysis of multilayer structures using processing Information

Abstract

A knowledge-based stress analysis coupling heuristic processing information with an analytical model for multilayer structures is presented. Failure problems commonly observed in layer structures have been classified into three types, i.e. loss of dimension stability, cohesive and adhesive failures. The cause-effect relationship of processing history, loading history and material properties with failure modes is very complicated. The heuristic experience of the cause-effect has been systematically organized into a knowledge base for stress analysis, diagnostics and redesign. The stress analysis results can be used to validate the diagnosis. A simple example, redesign rules for minimizing bending, is given. One case study on the effect processing condition on the radii of curvature and internal stresses in a three-layer structure is presented to demonstrate the importance of the coupling between heuristic experience and an analytical model for stress analysis.
