Interferometric noise penalty in 10 Gb/s LAN links

Abstract

The interferometric noise (IN) penalty in 10 Gb/s Ethernet local area network (LAN) was assessed as a function of receiver and transmitter reflection coefficients and other link parameters. The link penalty due to IN imposed limits upon the receiver and transmitter reflection coefficients in conjunction with the extinction ratio of the modulated light. For both transmitter and receiver 12 dB return loss and 4dB extinction ratio was observed.
