Hemodynamic evaluation of patients with puerperal sepsis and shock
Abstract
Septic shock encountered in puerperal patients has been studied in an effort to identify hemodynamic abnormalities. Serial measurements of cardiac index, peripheral vascular tone and oxygen consumption have been employed to determine therapy. A computer data bank has been programmed to yield patient data and influence critical decisions. The threat of high or low cardiac output shock syndrome requires prompt evaluation of myocardial function, as well as peripheral resistance. Reduced oxygen consumption reflects the severity of the sepsis. Digitalis-like agents or the use of pharmacologic agents having inotropic, as well as vasodilator properties, can be advantageous. © 1969.
