ERROR CORRECTION SCHEMES IN A MIXED VOICE/DATA ENVIRONMENT.
Abstract
Recent progress in computer communication and switching technology has made it possible and economical to intermix voice and data traffic in the same transport network. Performances of several selective repeat error control schemes in a mixed voice/data environment are evaluated. Two classes of protocols are considered, namely, hop-by-hop and end-to-end protocols. Within each class we consider three different schemes. They are the 1-CRC uniform scheme in which voice and data packets are treated indistinguishably, the 1-CRC scheme in which erroneous packets are dropped and only the data packets are retransmitted, and the 2-CRC scheme in which erroneous data packets are only dropped and voice packets with a correct header are delivered to the destination.
