Back to the Future: Lessons for Internet of energy networks
Abstract
The review of the telephony-to-Internet saga offers some useful analogies for energy infrastructure transformation. Every analogy is imperfect, and interpretations must be made with great care, focusing on the actual context of the new infrastructure. ICT technology, along with other enablers such as new grid technology, financial/policy innovations, and the core renewables, energy storage, and electrified transport technologies) will be deeply integrated together in a vast array of end products and services in this emerging Internet of energy networks. Emerging markets will pioneer and adopt several of these innovations and leapfrog into the era of the Energy Internet.
