Modulation characteristics of a dual waveguide structure consisting of a polymer ridge waveguide coupled to a semiconductor resonator containing quantum wells are described. The intensity of light transiting the polymer waveguide is modulated when the absorption of the quantum wells is varied by the Stark effect. Intensity modulation occurs since increased absorption broadens the resonance. A 2V change in bias results in a contrast ratio of 20 over a few Angstrom wavelength-range.
