A defect in a solid breaks translational symmetry and thus permits additional electron-phonon emission and absorption scatterings. These may be due to the lattice and defect interactions acting together in a second-order process; to the strain dependence of the defect interaction, in first order; and to the matrix element cross term from these two. We calculate the additional scattering in a model semiconductor for the acoustic-mode case. © 1973 The American Physical Society.
