A comparison of regression-based load sharing strategies for distributed database environments

View publication

Abstract

A set of strategies that address the problem which unreliable state information poses to useful load sharing in a distributed database system is examined. In this environment, sites must solve the problem of how alternative sites should be selected to process incoming transactions, given that the information on which the decision is based exhibits varying degrees of obsolescence. A set of regression-based adaptive strategies in which a feedback mechanism is used to compensate for obsolete information is presented. Transaction response time under the different adaptive strategies is analyzed, and the reasons for the performance differences are discussed.
