Dr. Manuel Proissl serves as Global Industry Applications Lead for Financial Services at IBM Research and Senior Technical Advisor to executive bodies, research institutions, and government agencies worldwide, with a distinguished track record of over 20 years advancing science, technology, and high-stakes industrial applications at the intersection of AI, quantum technology, and modernization of financial services & monetary policies.
He regularly engages at the highest levels of the financial industry — sitting in the boardrooms of global systemically important banks, wealth and asset managers, trading firms, financial regulators, and government committees — advising on the adoption and strategic development of AI and quantum capabilities. His practitioner-focused technical leadership has helped institutional investors innovate and optimize margins, trade operations, and risk controls, delivering significant cost savings, operational resiliency, and revenue gains. Several of his approaches have become embedded in data products and financial advisory tools trusted by leading banks today.
Dr. Proissl’s interdisciplinary expertise spans quantitative finance & risk management, economics, computer science, and quantum physics. He has worked in executive, advisory, and quantitative roles across international research collaborations, government laboratories, large financial institutions, and regulators worldwide, driving multi-billion-dollar revenue pools and delivering large-scale enterprise programs in digital innovation, model governance, and technology monetization. For instance, he pioneered the use of algorithmic fairness controls for AI models in mission-critical decision processes and model audits — a contribution that has shaped how financial institutions approach responsible AI deployment.
His work has been published in prestigious journals including Nature, Physical Review, and Springer, and he has been featured in renowned media venues such as Bloomberg, the Financial Times, and Fortune. He’s a recipient of several distinguished awards and contributed to quantum physics discoveries, one of which was recognized with the Nobel Prize. Dr. Proissl is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the American Physical Society, and the European AI Alliance, and holds a Ph.D. in Physics.
