Excursions and Tours

October 23 - 25, 2007
Organized by IBM Haifa Research Lab

Akko Tour

This tour will take place in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 24. The number of places is limited, so register soon!

The excursion will take us to ancient Acre, called Akko in Hebrew, which is an old crusader fort town close to Haifa. The tour includes a visit to a mosque, the Khan, and the colorful market place, and will end with a visit to a traditional Arab coffee house.

The bus for the excursion leaves the IBM site at 15:30. The tour itself will last approximately two hours, after which the bus will take us back to the IBM site.

The excursion is free of charge, but you will be asked to pay individually for entrance to the Mosque (5 shekels), and for refreshments at the coffee house.

You are kindly asked to wear modest clothes, as we will be touring religious places.

If you wish to join the Akko tour, please register soon as the number of participants is limited.

Other Tours

  • A tour of the famous Baha'i Gardens (Tuesday, October 23 at 12:00am): Haifa is the world headquarters of the Baha'i faith. The breathtaking Baha'i Gardens are open to the public, offering a stirring view of the Haifa Bay and the azure Mediterranean Sea. The tour is free of charge to conference participants.

  • A visit to the Hecht Museum (Thursday, October 25 at 11:00am) will be arranged, free of charge.

Staying in Israel a few more days?

A few people expressed their intent to stay in Israel for a couple of extra days. For those who wish to join, we are arranging a guided of the Old City of Jerusalem on Friday morning (Oct 26). This tour is also practical for people flying out of Israel later on Friday since the airport is only 40 km from Jerusalem.

For those who want to stay in Jerusalem, we recommend one of the local authentic hotels such as the Scottish guest house or the YMCA.

If you have never toured Jerusalem, this is an opportunity not to be missed. According to Jewish tradition "Ten measures of beauty descended to the world; nine were taken by Jerusalem and one by the rest of the world. [Babylonian Talmud: Kidushin 49b] ".

If you wish to join, send an e-mail to Shmuel Ur. The price will depend on the number of people participating in the tour.
