IBM Research Europe - Ireland Dublin, Ireland

I joined IBM Research Europe's Lab in Dublin in January 2016. Before that, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara (Go Gauchos!), where I also got my PhD and Master's degrees (2014/2011), both in Electrical Engineering. My undergraduate degree - a German 'Diplom Ingenieur' in Engineering Cybernetics - is from the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg (2008).

My research interests lie in mathematical modeling and control and any applications thereof, for instance in thermoacoustics, traffic networks, and biological systems. I have also worked in reinforcement learning and stochastic process modeling in the context of Smart Cities. Most recently, I wrapped up work on a 3-year project on applications of computer vision, bio-physical modeling, and machine learning to cancer diagnosis and surgical intervention, see also this IBM Research Projects page. The project was funded by the Irish government under the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) and was a partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and University College Dublin.
