  • Application deadline: January 15, 2022
  • Stipend and housing: provided by Princeton and IBM
  • Eligibility: US citizens and permanent residents; students enrolled in undergraduate study at the time of their application to the QURIP program
  • Starting date: June 6, 2022 or June 13, 2022 (depending on your academic calendar)
  • End date: August 26, 2022 or September 2, 2022 (depending on your academic calendar)

The QURIP program, launched in 2019, invites 10 undergraduate students from institutions across the US to research theoretical and experimental topics in quantum information. The program lasts for 12 weeks during the summer of 2022, beginning with six weeks of academic research in quantum science and engineering at Princeton, followed by another six weeks of translational research in quantum computing with the IBM Quantum team at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York.

The goal of QURIP is to provide rising scientists and engineers with experience, ranging from fundamental research to industrial applications, helping students develop their careers and chart a path through their graduate and post-graduate studies.

While at Princeton, students can work across several disciplines: from quantum hardware and devices, quantum materials, condensed matter physics, and atomic physics, to quantum information, algorithms, and architecture. Embedded in specific research groups, interns will engage with professors, graduate students, and postdocs on fast-paced, intensive research projects related to quantum science.

In the second half of the program, interns will be involved in the full stack of quantum computing research and development at IBM Quantum: spanning quantum applications and algorithms, error correction and mitigation, circuit compilation, and hardware characterization and benchmarking in Qiskit, to quantum computing-related hardware analysis and design. As part of QURIP, student will be mentored by world-class IBM Quantum researchers, have access to state-of-the-art quantum processors, and will contribute to cutting-edge research.

After a virtual program in 2021, we are planning for the 2022 QURIP program to be in-person. To get the most benefit from this fast-paced, intensive research program, we recommend that students have prior research experience and a strong academic record.
